I remember your hair in the snow. Contrast springtime will never know. Flowers in bloom can’t hold a candle to your rosey cheeks. Now the winter’s spent wondering how to pay the rent and drinking myself so sick, I fall gracefully down every calendar page. I’ll move out of this city. Move out of this neighborhood. I’ll quit my shitty jobs. I can’t stand living so close to you. I need to move out of this state of hysteria. You look so fucking happy amongst your sea of friends. I’m marooned. I’m shipwrecked on this front porch. I guess I never learned how to swim. Now the nights are spent in shades of blue and red. In between that spectrum, I’m just a disgusting mess of gray. You said, “You love me? That’s great. Can’t say I feel the same. I know you were out of the country but you forgot my birthday. Lose your mind on your own time. I guess you can say you’re a couple years too late.”

You say I’m a villain. A monster. I’m a nightmare. But you look in the mirror everyday and you’re not scared. If I play the part that Karloff played then your Lanchester. Equal parts abomination but with worse hair than her. You’re not so far away from me. In a tomb where I’ll decompose. No visitors. Not a singe rose. Maybe on my on birthday you’ll visit and say: “You weren’t so far away from me.”

I saw Christine the other day and she said all she had to say when she spit right in my face. Saw you at some party last weekend. Made me wish that I was dead. It’s just that I’ve been alive for so long, I think I’m due for a change. Your best friend thinks you can do better. Your best friend is more than likely right. I deserve to be alone every night. I got all these cob webs in my mouth. It’s been so long since I’ve had something to talk about. Boring conversation over slowly warming beer. It’s not that I like living this way. Waking up in piss to start the day. One day I’ll claw my way out or claw my fucking eyes out trying.

You always talk about how we first met. Getting high on your old roommates bed. Like a used condom. A band-aid on the street. The damage is done. Just drop it and move on. I love you glassy eyes. Get better glassy eyes. You lied awake on my floor on a pile of blankets. I still adore every cough and wheeze. Every toss and turn. Tell me you’re okay and I’ll take you at your word. Your boyfriend still has that same old needle in his arm. Your eyes still have that 4 am exhausted fuck you charm.

Someday maybe I’ll meet you on the west coast but right now Chicago’s got me by the throat.
